Battle of mid vs. Florida State, Maui Invitational, women's basketball woes, men's soccer regional and turkey talk

And I'm Connor Vandermark. I'm the sports editor here at Technician.

00:40
Daniel
There is a lot to discuss coming up this week. And last week we got football versus Florida State, the Battle of Mid Maui Invitational coming up next week, feast week, Olympic sports. And it is that time of year. We will end things with Turkey talk. Tech Talk is presented to you by Technician. Check us out on the web@certicianonline.com Instagram @ncocutechnician and Tech Sports on X. And as always, you can pick us up a copy of the print on the stands every Thursday. Okay? Play the, play the music, Hector.

01:21
Josiah
Foreign.

01:40
Daniel
We're back. Let's talk some basketball first. Will Wade, leading this team to an undefeated season so far. A good win versus VCU a few days ago. But you know, things have been kind of interesting. Four games, five techs, a tech in every game. It kind of seems like the refs, I wouldn't say they have a vendetta, but they're really trying to keep things, you know, under control and that's leading to anything NC State's doing, they're getting techs, you know, what do you guys say about that? Jacob?

02:10
Jakob
You know, I feel like that all just, it goes back to what were talking about last episode. Will Wade, he's a performative male. Let's be real here, guys. Like he's lit a fire into this team, which is good. But we've gotten to a point where has it just become unnecessary? Like, I feel like you've made your point. You've, you've brought a new culture to NC State and now the only thing we really need left to see is how can you perform on the court.

02:34
Daniel
So it's kind of like a fake it till you make it situation. I feel like with him like motivating everybody but at the same time it's part of, it's real part of the chip on the shoulder, all of that. But it's a little bit, you know, contrived in a way, and it absolutely is.

02:51
Jakob
I mean, but like we said, the VCU game, it was a good test. It, it likely, they likely should have won by more. But at the end of the day, a win's a win. You can't be upset about that. We're happy that we're undefeated. We go into Maui this upcoming week, feast week. It's the national holiday in college basketball, other than March Madness, of course. But what are your kind of your expectations for the team in Maui this year?

03:14
Daniel
Okay, before we get to feast week, let's talk a little bit more about VCU. McNeil, 28 minutes, 0 points, 0 for 4. You know, what do you got to say about that? I feel like it was kind of a situation. You ever heard the quote, I'd rather go over 30 than 0 for 9? McNeil was definitely in the 0 for 9 category. He just stopped shooting at some point. I mean, he was getting boards, he got nine rebounds. But what's going on there?

03:38
Jakob
I mean, yes, it's, he's. This is his real like kind of first minutes of his college career because last year he did not play nearly as much as he definitely should have. But it's definitely going to be a growing, like a bit of a learning curve for him. But I feel like that plays to the strengths of the team a little bit because we had other people definitely step up in his most notably absence. So, yeah, the team performed well overall, but there's definitely some individual performances that left a lot to be desired.

04:08
Daniel
Definitely. Connor, what do you got to say about that basketball beat?

04:11
Connor
I think the thing is this, Paul McNeil is very much a vault volume shooter. Right?

04:16
Daniel
Think like not close to the mic.

04:17
Connor
Skill level, but not comparing him to skill level, but we'll talk like 2018. Harden, for instance. He was putting up, you know, 30 shots a game. Not saying Paul McNeil is going to put up 30 shots a game, but we're going to see him average around 10 to 15 shots probably. I mean, he gets that ball at the three point line, you know, it's going up in the basket. It's not going to make all of them, obviously over four. Rough shooting day. But if you're not hitting shots, you do other things. You got nine boards. He's a guard. Guards don't usually do that. So he still got his work done in other ways.

04:45
Connor
Another thing, I know a lot of people, especially, you know, Duke fans, UNC fans on Twitter, whatever, they're like, oh, wow, it was a what, a six point game to VCU. You know, they're not even a group of power four school, whatever. VCU finished like in the 30s in Ken Palm rankings last year. Like VCU is a very good school for being a quote, mid major. Plus, I mean, you know, Will Wade return game. It was always destined to be a close game. NTC is not going to boat race people like 30, 40 every single time. And in terms of the text, you talk about Will Wade being a performative male. The last three technical fouls were all by players. You had the incident against UNCG with Trey Holloman and Quadriller Copeland. Expect more technicals from Quadrille Copeland. That's just kind of his personality.

05:34
Connor
Think like Draymond Green in the NBA and then the Darian Williams one that happened last game. I don't know exactly if it was something he said, something he did, whatever it was. But I mean, that's just the personality of this team. They're not afraid to show who they are. They're not going to play quiet and constrained.

05:49
Daniel
Fair enough. All right, let's go to Seton hall on Monday 2:30 on ESPN 2. Trey Parker revenge game. In a way, I know he's on that Seton hall squad. Other than that, I don't know what else to say. I. On ESPN analytics, it gives us like a 84 chance of winning. You know, obviously those analytics are kind of, you know, not great, not very reliable, but you know, I expect to blow out.

06:18
Jakob
Yeah, I'd kind of expect the same thing. But I also wouldn't be surprised if we see Trey Parker drop 40 on us for whatever reason.

06:25
Josiah
So can I share a stat?

06:26
Daniel
Sure.

06:27
Josiah
Okay. I need you guys, I need your honest opinion and I need you to be clear minded when I show this.

06:33
Connor
Okay?

06:34
Daniel
Okay.

06:34
Josiah
Player A, through their first five games, averaged 5.2 on 48% shooting in 14 and a half minutes. Okay.

06:43
Daniel
Okay.

06:44
Josiah
Player B averaged 3.4 on 20% shooting in 16 minutes.

06:51
Daniel
Okay.

06:52
Josiah
It's pretty clear.

06:53
Daniel
Yeah. Which player?

06:54
Josiah
Okay. Who do you think player A is? Player A, you described as solidifying himself as a go to scorer when you described this person that way last season.

07:06
Daniel
Oh, okay.

07:07
Josiah
They played for NC State last season.

07:10
Daniel
I mean, is it probably McNeil? No, that doesn't make sense. Yeah. Player A, I don't know. What do you think, Jacob? Trey Parker.

07:19
Josiah
Player A is Trey Parker through five games at NC State.

07:22
Daniel
Okay.

07:23
Josiah
Player B is Trey Parker. Through five games at Seton Hall.

07:27
Daniel
Okay, so he's bad this year.

07:28
Josiah
He's. He's been pretty bad. I mean we talked about last year like Braden, one of our other writers. He said he was like a budding star and like he just, he hasn't translated and it hasn't. Isn't going over.

07:41
Daniel
Yeah, that makes sense. I feel like he kind of had a to Quavion Smith playstyle like when he did get the ball last year. So I feel like it kind of he had to Quavion vibes but obviously the scoring wasn't there and I mean on that team he didn't get as many minutes like when Turkwavian was here. If you guys remember, he would play like 30, 40, 30 minutes and just chuck up 30 shots. So.

08:06
Connor
Well, I will say this, he was extremely talented in his time at ot. If anyone's watched that, he was. It was like a highlight reel every single game. I think Keats not playing him a whole lot last year kind of stunted his growth. And then once again this year at Seton Hall, I watch a lot of college basketball. I'm not going to sit here and pretend like I've sat here and watched a Seton hall basketball game this year. I probably should have because NC State plays them, but who knows, Maybe it's just they don't scheme around him. He is getting five more minutes a game, so that is something to note. But you know, it's just. I don't think he'll be that much of a threat. Yes, it's a revenge game for Trey Parker, but this is an entirely different team.

08:46
Connor
There's two of his teammates on this current NC State squad and one of them doesn't even play.

08:51
Daniel
True. Also something that should be mentioned, this Maui Vational Field. Just like it sucks.

08:58
Jakob
We have Arizona State, Boise State, Shamanade. If I couldn't even put a guess as to where that's located in the U.S. seton Hall, Texas, USC and Washington State. It, it's a very. It's not the strongest Maui Field that specifically compared to last year when we had UConn there and some other pretty impressive mid major teams. But it's. It'll be impressive if NC State can pull out the overall victory. But I also wouldn't be surprised if they do so.

09:29
Daniel
Okay. I don't think it would be that impressive honestly looking at that field but.

09:32
Connor
Well, there is an opportunity for two Quad one wins there with Texas and usc. I don't know if anyone watched any games last night, but USC versus Troy, it already Feels like March. They went to triple overtime. USC hit a buzzer beater from three as time expired. They were down two, put up a Hail Mary.

09:49
Daniel
Wow.

09:50
Connor
There you go.

09:51
Daniel
Well, are they ranked?

09:54
Connor
That's a good question. I'm pretty sure they're ranked. Let me double check real quick.

09:59
Daniel
Yeah, I don't know. I just remember last. There were a lot of intense games with, like, Michigan State. UNC was a good one, Yukon playing. And to have this weak Maui Field, it's kind of disappointing because Maui's supposed to be the. The crown gem of feast week, you know, and the fact that it's, you know, it's kind of disappointing. All right. Also something else that should be noted. Michael o' Connell in the G League on the Santa Clara, whatever, Santa Cruz warriors or whatever.

10:31
Jakob
So what I'm hearing is Michael o' Connell is about to be the next Steph Curry.

10:36
Daniel
Was he the best player on that team in 2024?

10:40
Josiah
No.

10:41
Daniel
No, no.

10:42
Connor
I don't know why you're even considering.

10:43
Daniel
That he's the only one to make the league. Kind of.

10:47
Jakob
I mean, DJ Burns was on the.

10:49
Daniel
Greensboro Swarm for a total of two days immediately. Okay, whatever. Sorry, that was conjecture.

10:55
Josiah
How long has OConnell been on?

10:57
Daniel
I don't know.

10:58
Josiah
I don't know.

10:58
Daniel
That's a good question. But he's getting some minutes. He's getting some minutes in real games.

11:01
Josiah
Oh, is he actually playing?

11:02
Daniel
Yes. Oh, I saw him shoot a shot on Twitter.

11:04
Connor
So it's also not just Michael o'.

11:06
Daniel
Connell.

11:07
Connor
Jack Clark is also on that team. He is on that team, what, two years ago?

11:11
Daniel
Yeah, but he wasn't on the, you know, Final Four.

11:13
Connor
He wasn't on the final. It was three years ago. He wasn't on the final 14. But it is a former NC State player. I do think it's cool that there's two former nc. They didn't play together. Yeah, I do think it's cool that two NC State players did because we saw Turquavian Smith go to the league. He was perennial bench player, slash G League guy, which is unfortunate because an NC State fan knows how talented he was. Jarkel Joyner never got a shot. DJ Burns balled out in the summer league and then didn't get an opportunity after that. He played overseas. DJ Horn played overseas. I think Breon Pass is also overseas.

11:48
Daniel
Really?

11:49
Jakob
I believe he's in Greece.

11:50
Connor
Has now moved on to play by play.

11:54
Daniel
Yeah, yeah.

11:55
Connor
I think he does network.

11:56
Daniel
He's a color commentator. But, yeah, he's done a decent job. At that other way. All right, let's move on to football. Enough basketball talk. The 41 to 7 loss to Miami. Let's make it official here. CJ Bailey has been cut from the 2026 Miami roster. His tryout did not go well. You know, just generally, it was bad vibes the whole game. And the. The prediction from Josiah about the pass rush was a hundred percent correct. It just seemed like he had no time back there, and he was throwing picks left and right.

12:33
Jakob
It was rough. It was.

12:34
Josiah
It did not look pretty. I had, like. I didn't watch most of the first half, but I turned it on and it was 24 to nothing. And I saw they showed on ESPN. He'd been pressured on, like, 57% of his throws. Like, more than. Like, that's just. He had gotten away. I think he got sacked twice in the game. So, like, the numbers weren't there. You watch the game. That's not what looked like Anthony Carter. Like, he had nothing. He just. There was. Any of them. None of them could do anything.

13:03
Daniel
It was hard to watch. Yeah. All right. I think the story of that game, though, was not on the field. It was the press conference after at least the most interesting story to me. A reporter on the Miami beat was talking to Dave Doeren after the game. He asked him a question, kind of an odd question. Hey, Coach, I've got to hand it to you. Your birthday's on December 3, right? I have a couple of family members with birthdays on that day, so it's a good birthday to have. So I was just noticing that to lighten the mood a little bit. And his response was kind of like, all right, whatever. Like, he kind of ignored the question, and. And then the reporter doubled down. He was like, coach, the birthday thing was just designed to lighten your mood a little bit.

13:50
Daniel
And Doeren was like, I got my butt kicked. This ain't funny to me. Do you understand that? I do this for a living. I'm like, not speaking some of the expletives, but pretty. Pretty hilarious.

14:04
Jakob
Yeah. Shout out. Happy birthday, Dave Doeren. By the way, December 3rd's coming up, but, yeah, that's. That's a tough look for the reporter right there. I don't know why you would double down on that in that scenario after this man just lost by 34 points, when in reality, that was a stupid touchdown that we scored at the end. So in reality, he got shut out. Let's be real here. Yeah, it just. Overall, that game was. That game was a lot of hot garbage. Didn't cross midfield at all in the first half, so that was impressive. Yeah. Silver lining though. Like Daniel said, we don't have to worry about C.J. Bailey transferring to Miami because they don't want him now, so. But yeah, I don't, I'm not sure why the reporter would go in that direction.

14:47
Jakob
That, that was not a, not a good look for him there.

14:51
Josiah
And like, it would have been one thing if it was like that day or like the next day. Like if it was like, hey, coach, your birthday is tomorrow. It was like it's three weeks away.

15:01
Jakob
Yeah.

15:02
Connor
And it's just, I mean, we're all journalists, right? We've all covered a bunch of different NC State games or Cane's games or whatever. It's just not a question you ask at all. It had zero relevance to the game, had zero relevance to any storylines outside of the game. I mean, the dude just lost by 34 points and you're sitting there asking about his birthday. And I see, I've seen people on Twitter too, like criticize Doran's response or whatever. I would respond the same way. You lost by 34 points after beating, you know, number eight Georgia Tech. The expectations were high and you get blown out. I would be pretty angry too. You can't blame them.

15:38
Daniel
It's an unserious question. I would love to ask Rod Brindemore that out of Canes game because he would be very upset. That's a nonsense man coaching that Hurricanes team and he would be very upset. All right. We forgot to mention something from basketball. I apologize. How about the student section leaders? The. What do they call it? The Red Reckon Raise.

16:02
Connor
The Red Reckoners.

16:04
Josiah
Sorry.

16:05
Daniel
All right. They're fine. Whatever. They're fine. But did you guys see this sheet that they gave out to the student section members? It's kind of like mirroring what Duke does when they play unc. They had this long list of like insults and things about the players. But some of these insults you got, you got pulled up. Connor. Some of the, some of these insults were just very embarrassing. Like, one of them was like, this guy has a podcast that has like a thousand like followers on Instagram. Like, you know, that's not bad. He's growing his po, especially for a college player. One of them was like, he hit a game winner against Kansas and he's been riding that high ever since. And it was like last year he hit the game winner. We're four games into the season. I'm like, Come on.

16:53
Jakob
If they're going to. If they're going to continue with this, they. They need to. They need to dig a little deeper and actually find some stuff. But also, like, this is embarrassing. This. This is really embarrassing, guys.

17:04
Connor
Like, I've got the sheet pulled up right here for one guy for Brandon Jennings in the notes. They have. Having nil in your bio with under 5k followers is wild. Nobody's inquiring, little bro.

17:17
Josiah
Okay?

17:18
Connor
Only average 2.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game last year. Quote or parentheses, supposed to be a leader for this team. And there's just. There's other stuff where it's like, how much raw talent does he actually have? One guy, it's like, attended the NBA draft in 2023 to, quote, manifest his way into the league. There's another one where it's like, in 2018, his friend said he looked like this giraffe. It's horny stuff, right? NC State is trying to solidify themselves as a basketball school, so let's act like it. Yeah, I'm completely good with, you know, the red reckoners and, you know, leading the student section and cheering and all that. Whatever. Let's do it. This is. This is corny. As an NC State fan, I don't agree with the sheets.

18:10
Daniel
Yeah, this ain't it.

18:11
Connor
If you're gonna do it, dig a little deeper. Otherwise, don't do it at all.

18:15
Daniel
Yeah, especially if you're gonna, like, go down the, like, ESPN, like, stats. It'd just be like, this guy had like two points per game. Like, come on.

18:24
Connor
Like, there's another one that says, has family in the modeling industry. Obviously he had to choose a different route.

18:32
Hector
Wow.

18:33
Connor
Plays the saxophone. Might be the only basketball player I know that plays it. The saxophone that says from England in it. It's just. It makes no sense to me. I mean, and once again, like, it. It's just corny behavior. Like, I get making jokes and digs at the other team. Like, that's something that I feel like all sports fans do at some point. This is. This is like middle school level insults. This is not a power for supposed championship contender. This is not how we're supposed to act.

19:11
Daniel
No, definitely not. I feel like they did this last year against unc. Maybe I'm mistaken. I've been saying this for a little bit and people are telling me I'm wrong, but I feel like they gave out a sheet last year against unc, but it wasn't like this. It was kind of like it had some. Some cheers like it had our fight song, things like that. We should, we should do that honestly, because it helps the casual fan. There's a lot of new fans obviously with Will Wade who maybe haven't been watching the past few years, you know, and they see all this hype from Will Wade. Now they're watching. We should give them a sheet. We shouldn't gatekeep like, you knowing our fights on it and things like that. But you know, doing this is. I don't have a good feeling about it.

19:56
Daniel
All right, back to football. Sorry we had to jump. We had to include that because we couldn't stray. That's something that's worth talking about, but. All right.

20:03
Jakob
Brazil.

20:04
Daniel
Brazil.

20:05
Jakob
Brazil. So in case Anyone hasn't heard, NC State next season will open its 2026 football season in Brazil for a Week 0 game against Virginia. They haven't decided exactly like what city it's going to be in. Chances are it'll probably be either Sao Paulo or Rio. But Brazil, yeah, Brazil.

20:28
Daniel
I kind of want to go. I mean, I don't really have the financial means to go, but I would love to go, especially because I'm going to be graduated and probably unemployed because my prospects are not great right now. So we'll see. But maybe I'll have, I'll scrounge enough money to maybe get out to that game. I've seen some criticism like, oh, why are we going down to Brazil? All this, all that. I feel like if we announced were going to Ireland, people would be hyped up like, oh, we're going to Ireland, that's cool. But it's a similar cost of flight. I'm sure the hotels are probably similar cost. You know, tickets probably will be cheaper because who in Brazil is going to go to this game? I think that's where most of the criticism comes from.

21:11
Daniel
What like Brazilian person is going to be like, let's go, I want to go to this game.

21:17
Josiah
What are you trying to say, Daniel?

21:18
Daniel
It's one thing to do like an Eagles packers game there. I'm sure the NFL has a decent amount of fans in South America. There's no way North Carolina State football and Virginia football have a lot of fans. How many alumni are down there in South America?

21:34
Connor
2.

21:34
Daniel
2.

21:36
Connor
I will say I think the funny part about the whole game is that, you know, NT State and Virginia played.

21:42
Jakob
This year, but it was a non conference game.

21:45
Connor
In Carter Finley, it was a non conference game. They play in Brazil next year. It's a conference game. It's an ACC game. It makes absolutely no sense to me.

21:56
Daniel
I think they elevated it to a conference game so it like would matter a little bit more. But it's like bro, that's not going to get the fans down there. Like they're going to be wanting to go to Brazil because it's Brazil. It's not about, oh, I want to see NT State football. Like it's more of an excuse to go to Brazil for like, you know, the Wolfpack club members, probably not someone like myself, but.

22:19
Jakob
And you know, I would like to say this is first international game for either program. So I mean I guess growing the college football game a little bit, like you said, it's not going to probably reach as far of an extent as like an NFL game in Brazil does. But I digress. Other like obviously we have the Dublin game every year. Dublin cursed exists. So are we going to get a Sao Paulo or Rio curse incoming? Because you know Florida State last year they played in Dublin and lost or and won. I can't remember exactly. But after that it was straight torture for every Seminole fan after that. And also Kansas State this year had a very similar experience. So it'll be interesting to see if we continue the international curse in the Southern hemisphere.

23:06
Daniel
All right, that was a great bridge to what we can discuss now. Florida State vs. NC State tonight, Friday, 8pm on ESPN. Honestly, I don't have a lot of notes on this game. Like I said, in the preview battle of mid, Both teams are 5 and 5 trying to get a bowl game in their, you know, final two contests. It's just like they're both looking ahead to the next game obviously with rivalry matchups coming up. And you know, it's just like, yeah, what do you got on this, Jacob?

23:39
Jakob
This is a game of dumb versus dumber. I'm sure you've all seen the two clowns fighting meme. This is exactly what this game is going to between Mike Norville and Dave Doeren. That's, that's two coaches who have probably way extended their time on these teams, likely more than they should have. But like you said, a win puts NC State back in a bowl game. But all eyes are on rivalry week with Bill Belichick's first game leading unc. So it's Florida stakes Dukey in conference play. NC State's dookie in general. So who's going to be less dookie tonight?

24:14
Connor
Well, I think the biggest question is obviously week one Florida State had that huge upset against Alabama. Everyone thought Florida State Was back. How much stock do you put in that game? Because originally it was thought was, oh, Florida State good, Alabama bad. Alabama is one of the top teams in the country right now. So how much do you focus on that game in comparison to this one?

24:37
Daniel
I mean, obviously the CFP doesn't really care about that game. Obviously, they're in the way. They're ranking everything. But everyone knows that. They've got a little bit of tilt over there in that committee. But I don't know. I mean, I've heard it. I've heard something that. I don't know who said it. It might have been one of you guys. That Tommy Castellanos. He's kind of like a beginning of the year. He does great, and then he falls off at the end of the year.

25:07
Josiah
Someone told me what happened at BC last year.

25:09
Hector
Yeah.

25:09
Daniel
Yeah, I guess it was you that said that. So. Yeah, you know, I. I think the. The tickets aren't too. Too expensive for this game, so I might try to pull up because it would be my last game to be able to go to. But at the same time. Yeah.

25:25
Josiah
Jacob, can you say dookie again? You said like eight times in that setup.

25:30
Connor
Yeah, I will say, I do have another stat. Only three teams in the country have racked up four wins versus opponents who are 7 and 3 or better on the season. Indiana, Alabama and NC State.

25:48
Daniel
There you go.

25:48
Connor
Because they beat Pittsburgh, they beat Virginia, they beat Georgia Tech.

25:52
Jakob
We did not beat Pitt.

25:54
Connor
And they beat. Who was the. Who was the win?

25:57
Daniel
It was Wake Forest, right?

25:58
Connor
It was Wake Forest, yeah.

26:01
Daniel
Sports editor, dropping the knowledge over here.

26:03
Connor
I'm trying to focus on so many things at once. My bad, guys.

26:08
Jakob
I guess we can segue because there's not much else to talk about with that FSU game, but women's basketball still can't figure there. Figure it out there. That TCU game, that. That was ugly. That Coastal Carolina game, specifically in the second half, that was also not. Not what Westmore was probably looking for. This team misses Isaiah, James and Sinai river so. So much. They. It. It's not been great. Connor, what do you have to add on that?

26:35
Connor
They just don't have a go to score. Last year you had Isaiah, James. You give the ball to Isaiah, she'll get you a bucket and she'll get you a three. She'll get you a clutch floater like we saw it all of last year. This year, what was it in that TCU game? Their top three players, Zam Jones, Camille Pierre and Zoe Brooks, they shot a combined. I Want to say it was like 7 of 36 or something like that. Zam Jones was 0 for 9. Camille Pierre was like 5 of 12, and she only got most of those in the fourth quarter. And Zoe Brooks was 2 of 11. Like, they just don't have a go to. Zoe Brooks was getting clamped. So you go to Camille Pierre. Camille Pierre just chucks up shots.

27:19
Connor
She puts up a bunch of mid ranges that she doesn't make consistently. She's trying to do what she did at Vanderbilt, right, where she was realistically the only good player. Now she's on a team that has a lot of talent, and she's still trying to do what she was doing last year and just put up as many shots as possible.

27:34
Daniel
Yeah, not a good situation, but they have four games here to recharge for, like, not great opponents. And then they play Oklahoma December 3rd. I think Oklahoma is like number six. So should be another interesting test there. I mean, it's crazy how many ranked opponents Westmore has scheduled, but it's good that there's a little bit of a lull here where they can reload and get there. Get it together. All right, Olympic Sports Talk. How about number one, women's cross country competing for a national championship tomorrow at 10:20 Saturday morning on ESPNU. Tune into that if you want to see the possibility of NC State athletics hanging a banner. It's. It's not a common occurrence.

28:22
Jakob
So, yeah, I mean, women's cross country, they. They've been a dynasty these past. These past couple seasons. Going for their fourth national title in five years tomorrow. Just a couple notes on that. Biggest competition is definitely going to be BYU and the defense who won last year, and that their star freshman, Jane Hendegren. She is a freshman who holds the new Big 12 record for the women's race, the 6K. And she won her Mountain Regional by 42 seconds.

28:50
Josiah
Wow.

28:51
Jakob
She beat last year's champion from New Mexico. Yeah, it's astounding what she's doing as a freshman. And if she wins the, like, the individual race tomorrow, she has the opportunity to be the first freshman in 40 years to be the individual national champion.

29:06
Daniel
That'd be pretty remarkable. But NC State, we got Grace Hartman, Angelina, Napoleon, Hannah Gates, all of. All three of those have been at the top of the leaderboard. You know, every race, we'll see what they can do. Maybe one of them just pops off and is able top that freshman.

29:25
Jakob
It'll be also a matter if Grace Hartman is healthy, as she's been dealing with that foot issue. Her plantar fasciitis. So we're hoping she can get in there and race and hopefully lead us to a national title.

29:35
Daniel
Definitely.

29:36
Josiah
Shameless plug. There's a Great article on technicianonline.com for Mr. Daniel Suzanne about all three of them. Angelina Napoleon and Hannah Gates.

29:46
Connor
Yeah.

29:46
Josiah
Grace Hartman.

29:47
Daniel
Yeah.

29:47
Josiah
Go check it out.

29:48
Daniel
Yeah, it's fun to talk to them. They were all very eloquent. It's kind of shocking when you speak to an athlete that's really eloquent and you're like, dude, they could do my job. I could definitely not do your job. So it's kind of funny.

30:01
Jakob
Men's soccer.

30:02
Daniel
Yep.

30:03
Jakob
First, second round of the tournament on Sunday. They're going to play Marshall, number 15 ranked team in the tournament. Fun fact, they were eliminated by Marshall last year in the NCAA tournament. So a little bit of a revenge game for NC State this weekend.

30:17
Daniel
Yeah. 2 to 1. Hopefully they can get on the board this time. Their. Their last few games. I mean, not in the first round against Louisville, but their second round matchup against Syracuse. They really struggled to put one in the back of the net. Just everything was going wrong. So hopefully they can figure that out. And I. I haven't looked at the rankings, but Syracuse is a really good team. To not be able to score against them, you know, that's not really. It's not so bad. But against Marshall, we'll see what happens. Marshall was a lot better last year, so. Anyway. All right, now we can transition to Turkey talk. Check it out here in a second. All right, we're back here with Turkey Talk. We welcome Kelsey Bone, our culture editor here at Technician. Say hi, Kelsey.

31:05
Josiah
Hi, everyone.

31:07
Daniel
All right, so to start off, we're talking Thanksgiving. We're talking turkey, we're talking food, you know? But let's start off with something wholesome. What are you thankful for? I'll go first. I'm thankful that YouTube TV could settle things with Disney because now I'm able to watch sports for real. So. How about that, Jacob?

31:29
Jakob
I'll get a little sappy, I guess. I'm thankful for this job and all the people I've met at this job. You guys are some of my best friends in college. Okay, that's all. Cringe. I'm thankful for Sam Darnold. I'm thankful for no Geno Smith. And I'm thankful for Sam Darnold. You should be thankful for Drew Locke.

31:50
Daniel
For Drew Locke.

31:51
Josiah
Is he. Is he still our backup? He's still our backup, right?

31:53
Daniel
Yeah. Yeah. You should know that.

31:55
Josiah
Yeah, yeah. I probably should. I know, Sam. I know. We traded Sam Darnold to the Vikings and you know Drew Locke. Howell.

32:02
Connor
Sam Howell. That's what I meant.

32:04
Josiah
Sam Howell to the Vikings and we signed Drew Locke. Yeah. I'm so scared for, like Week 16 when Sam Darnold's going to throw another four interceptions. This isn't a very good week to be thankful for Sam Darnold.

32:16
Daniel
He'll lose to the Colts. Don't worry.

32:18
Josiah
No, that's that dude.

32:19
Daniel
If we lose to the Colts, I'm not.

32:21
Jakob
Anyways, out of the sports talk. Connor, what are you thankful for?

32:24
Connor
Well, I'm going to stay back in the sports talk. I'm thankful for college basketball. Best sport in the world. Frank William Wade and Frank William Wade, of course. And the opportunity he's given NC State to be good again because 2023 was really exciting. Let's go back.

32:41
Daniel
Yeah, Kelsey.

32:43
Kelsey
I'm thankful for Robert Irwin and how far he's made it on Dancing with the Stars. I'm thankful for my culture correspondents who come to the meetings and I'm thankful for how well I'm doing in technician fantasy football.

33:03
Daniel
Okay, let's be honest. Nobody is paying attention to that. I haven't set my lineup once this year.

33:07
Connor
She has Jonathan Taylor, so it's just kind of like a cheat code.

33:11
Jakob
Overrated anyways.

33:13
Connor
Mvp, by the way. Better than anyone.

33:16
Daniel
We don't need to talk about anymore. I don't fell this episode. Thank you very much. All right, any takes on Thanksgiving here? You know, I'll start. I feel like Thanksgiving is not a great holiday for senior in college. At least this is my experience because I already know how many times I'm going to be asked, you know, what are your plans after school? I'm going to have to talk to all my relatives and they're like, oh, are you still going to try to go to law school? I don't want to be like, no. And it's just going to be stressful. Of course, you know, the food is good. The food is good. You know, the football.

33:53
Jakob
Is the food good, though?

33:54
Daniel
The food is great. All right. The food is great. I'm not going to fight the food, but. But the.

33:57
Jakob
It could better.

33:58
Daniel
The football is overrated. It's always a bad like Lions or Commanders game that you don't want to watch.

34:04
Connor
We'll go back to the football in a second. What do you mean, is the food good? What are we talking about?

34:09
Jakob
You can't tell me you wake up craving turkey.

34:13
Connor
Turkey one day a Year, you get, like, a good Thanksgiving plate. It's delicious.

34:18
Jakob
I don't know. I think the food's kind of.

34:20
Connor
What about the food isn't good? Like, you. What do you think is overrated?

34:24
Jakob
It all tastes very similar to each other. Maybe that's just because that sounds like a you issue.

34:29
Josiah
No, that sounds like a grandma issue. Dude, your grandma does not cook well enough. Is that what it is, Josiah?

34:35
Jakob
My grandma's 95 years old and doesn't cook anymore.

34:38
Josiah
Okay, then who cooks Thanksgiving? Who does Thanksgiving?

34:41
Jakob
Usually it's my aunt and uncle, but they're okay. Okay, well, my dad last year didn't take the skin off the mashed potatoes.

34:48
Josiah
Oh, really? Okay. Okay, well, listen, as a. As a. As a grandma, like, as. As one that eats grandma's food. Dude, I didn't know how to segue that. Like, I started with. Yeah, dude, that was gonna be.

35:03
Connor
My hot take is like, everybody hates on turkey, and I love.

35:06
Josiah
I love turkey.

35:07
Jakob
It's so dry, though.

35:08
Connor
Once again, that sounds like y' all problem.

35:11
Josiah
That sounds like an aunt and uncle problem.

35:14
Connor
I'm not dissing Halbers.

35:16
Daniel
Y' all are all right.

35:16
Connor
Y' all are probably great people. He's not all right.

35:19
Daniel
I. I think I found the problem here. You're from Florida, right?

35:22
Jakob
No, I'm from Arizona.

35:23
Connor
That's me. That's me. I'm from. I'm from Florida. Even worse.

35:26
Daniel
You just. You don't have family members that know what to.

35:28
Connor
Why are we dissing Arizona and Florida? Hang on.

35:30
Daniel
They're just, like. They're not cuisine states. All right? Think of a state that has good cuisine, you know, down south, but not Florida. Like, you're thinking South Carolina and North Carolina. Not with Florida. Great barbecue up north. You got pizza. You got. You got anything you want. Really? In, like, New York.

35:48
Jakob
This just feels like an attacking Jacob segment more than turkey talk.

35:51
Connor
Yeah, well, now he's going after Florida too.

35:53
Josiah
So I'm like, he went after Thanksgiving food, and you expected there to be no repercussions? That's. That's a crazy take. That's insane.

36:04
Connor
Kelsey, what do you think.

36:08
Kelsey
My thoughts on Thanksgiving?

36:10
Hector
Just. We.

36:11
Josiah
We'll go to Jacob, attack Jacob with us, say something bad about Jacob's.

36:15
Kelsey
Jacob and I recently became best friends. Little known fact. So I actually. I actually can't do that right now. However, saying it all tastes the same is crazy. Are you slathering all of it with gravy? Because there are people that, like, just cover the entire plate with gravy.

36:28
Jakob
I'm not that much of a psychopath.

36:30
Kelsey
Okay, that would, you know, turkey and.

36:33
Jakob
Mashed potatoes get gravy. Everything else is maybe stuffing. If I'm feeling adventurous, sure. But everything else.

36:40
Kelsey
If we're covering our cranberry sauce in cranberry sauce is.

36:43
Jakob
Cranberry sauce is gross.

36:44
Kelsey
Then that's why everything tastes the same.

36:46
Jakob
Cranberry sauce is absolutely disgusting. If you have that on your Thanksgiving table, I can't trust you in any way, shape, or form. We're not friends, but are we talking.

36:54
Kelsey
Like, cranberry jam, like, the stuff that comes out of, like, the can, or are we talking sauce, like, actual.

37:00
Jakob
Any cranberry sauce?

37:01
Kelsey
I feel like people who say that haven't actually had cranberry sauce. They've only had, like, cranberry jelly.

37:07
Jakob
No, no, I've had both, and they're both not good.

37:10
Kelsey
Do you like fun? Like, do you like. Do you like good things or no?

37:15
Jakob
No, apparently not fair.

37:17
Connor
I think something might be wrong with your taste buds, and that very well.

37:22
Jakob
Could be an accurate statement.

37:23
Connor
And I guess. I guess we're not friends anymore, apparently, because there ain't nothing wrong with some cranberries.

37:29
Daniel
Do you have long Covid long. Can you still taste?

37:33
Jakob
I mean, I had Covid in September, so that very well could be my taste buds.

37:37
Daniel
There you go. All right, more takes. Honestly, Blackout Wednesday, if you haven't heard that's when people, like, go with their friends, you know, and have some fun.

37:48
Jakob
Your hometown friends, like high school friends.

37:51
Kelsey
Your ex boyfriend, your on and off ex boyfriend from high school. Do not talk to him over Thanksgiving break.

37:58
Daniel
That's like. That's better than the Thursday. Let's be real. But, you know, maybe I'm just an alcoholic. I'm not. I don't drink that much, so there you go. And I'm 21, thank you very much.

38:09
Jakob
This outtake reel is going to be crazy. Hector.

38:13
Daniel
No, we don't need to make one with this section. Also, about that, it was 90%, you know, no sports. We got. We got. Put some more sports into that. The real, you know.

38:24
Jakob
Okay, let's not trash on Hector. Anyways, back to Thanksgiving.

38:28
Kelsey
Can I share my Thanksgiving hot take?

38:30
Daniel
Sure.

38:30
Kelsey
Okay. I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you are going to your extended relative's house and you know that you have differing political opinions, live stream it. Everyone is always posting on TikTok, like, oh, can't wait to go fight with all my relatives. But I'm not getting a notification on my phone that we're live streaming, so live stream it. Thanks.

38:51
Jakob
Hey, you can probably make some money out of it, too. Exactly.

38:54
Kelsey
Like, do. Do something to help yourself. Maybe you can give your relatives a cut if it's really good. You know, livestream it.

39:00
Daniel
Yeah, that's a great suggestion.

39:03
Jakob
What? Other than football, I feel like the only thing allowed to be on TV in the morning is the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. And then afterwards, they always have the dog show on. If I get a little interested in the dog show, I'll keep it on. But if not, when football starts, football is the only thing that's allowed to be on that.

39:18
Daniel
The parade is so dumb. People.

39:20
Connor
Excuse me.

39:21
Kelsey
Excuse me.

39:21
Daniel
People who love these, like, big, like, commercial parades. I don't. I don't mess with it.

39:27
Connor
There's a bunch of fun haters on that side of the table. Do y' all enjoy happiness and like good food?

39:33
Jakob
I would like to say I'm supportive of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, but not Thanksgiving food.

39:37
Connor
So, like, that's almost more of a travesty than what he just said. Although what he just said is a borderline felony.

39:44
Jakob
That's like the start of Christmas. When Santa Claus gets to wherever that, like, point is at the very end. That's Christmas right there. Now Christmas has started.

39:52
Connor
Well, not necessarily, because then after the. After the parade, then you have the meal, whether it's for lunch or for dinner or whatever. Once that meal is over, then it's Christmas.

40:03
Daniel
If you're past Santa believing age, then I don't think you're really watching the Macy's Day Parade all that intently, but there you go.

40:12
Connor
I'm not saying sit there for three hours and watch it dead on, but.

40:16
Daniel
Like, have it on the background.

40:17
Connor
Have it on. In the background you see some cool floats. Maybe like a singer you haven't seen in a while. I don't understand what the problem is with it. Woody Woodpecker. That's the best part.

40:28
Josiah
Listen, that's just so nostalgic. Woody Woodpecker. And, like, I know you don't believe in Santa, but, I mean, you can still appreciate Santa. He's a symbol. No, in my home, Christmas starts November 1st at 12:01. But that's like, for everybody. That's like the national. Like, you see Santa and the Macy's Day Parade, and that's Christmas. Christmas has begun.

40:52
Jakob
And also the Radio City Rockettes are there. They do their whole Christmas thing, too. That's cool.

40:57
Connor
I would pay to see you do that.

40:59
Jakob
No, I think Daniel is just an entertainment fun hater. I'm apparently a food fun hater.

41:06
Connor
So listen, best part of Thanksgiving Day parade, Snoopy float. Who doesn't like Snoopy?

41:12
Daniel
Okay, I like Snoopy. All right, Hector, what's your takes?

41:15
Hector
Oh, hey guys. I'm Hector, the video editor and producer that.

41:21
Daniel
Yeah, sorry, I didn't forget.

41:23
Hector
Supposed to talk.

41:23
Jakob
Wave your hand.

41:27
Hector
I'm off camera. I'm not supposed to be on hot takes about Thanksgiving. Well, Thanksgiving for me is a lot more different than I feel like for you.

41:33
Josiah
All.

41:34
Hector
I mean, I don't. My family doesn't like we get together, but it's not like, oh, we have like Thanksgiving foods and stuff.

41:41
Jakob
Like, is this because we're white, Hector?

41:43
Hector
This is exactly because you're white. In case you didn't know, I am Mexican from San Luis Potosí. Viva Mexico. But last year we just had like regular what we usually have when we have cookouts. We have like, you know, just steak, chicken. We have lengua, which is cow tongue, which is so bomb. It's more. It's really good. It sounds disgusting, but it's so bomb. And yeah, I don't have a whole lot of takes. Again, based off of the comments I got on the last video saying I like flat soda. I have horrible food takes. So I'm not going to comment on that anymore.

42:18
Connor
I just. I can't get behind it.

42:20
Daniel
I'm sorry.

42:22
Connor
Hey, your opinion is your opinion.

42:25
Hector
Obviously it's wrong.

42:26
Connor
I guess it can't be more wrong than any of the things that have.

42:30
Daniel
Just been said earlier the Macy's Day. Why?

42:32
Connor
You guys, it's not even that so much as Jacob talking about how all Thanksgiving food tastes the same. Because that's genuinely a taste bud issue.

42:43
Daniel
Yeah, I don't know. This guy's an idiot.

42:45
Connor
You're sitting there and tell me turkey tastes the same as Mac and cheese.

42:47
Jakob
I don't have Mac and cheese on Thanksgiving.

42:49
Daniel
What?

42:50
Josiah
Yeah, I think the problem is you're home. It's like the Thanksgiving meal that you're being served. I think that's the problem. No Mac and cheese. The turkey is dry. I think that there's a trend. There's. There's a trend that we're going toward.

43:06
Daniel
We gotta get this guy like a friendsgiving or something. Like, so we can show him some real good Thanksgiving food. Although if call. Alright, here's a take about friendsgiving. If college students are making it's probably not gonna be that good. That's been my experience and most of the time people just get like store bought cookies from Harris Teeter or just like they don't really get Thanksgiving food, but it's still a fun concept.

43:29
Jakob
Don't get me wrong, I like a good chemical cookie here and there, but like, if that's the only thing being offered to me, like, come on, guys, lock in.

43:37
Daniel
Yeah.

43:38
Hector
To add on to that, I'm having a friendsgiving on Monday with some friends and there's an excel sheet of all the food that we have. I opened it last Friday or like earlier this week. All there was on it was bojangles, fried chicken, case of beer, and that was it.

43:55
Connor
Now, NC thing I've ever heard, there's.

43:59
Hector
Mac and cheese and like mashed potatoes on it now. But I was like, what more do you need Right there.

44:04
Kelsey
This might be like the male experience of friendsgiving though, because I feel like when I have friendsgiving with my friends, we all actually like cook things and it's good. So this may not be the college experience. It may be like the male trying to plan something and put together a.

44:18
Hector
Meal experience and you know, we have the best time and I'm sure it's great.

44:22
Josiah
Yeah.

44:23
Kelsey
I just.

44:24
Daniel
Yeah. No pictures taken. People enjoying. It's great.

44:30
Connor
If you're hanging out with the guys.

44:32
Jakob
Right.

44:32
Connor
And it's just the guys. There's never going to be a picture ever.

44:36
Daniel
No. I have like two pictures of me and my best friend.

44:39
Connor
I've known some of my friends for over a decade and there are about three pictures of us combined.

44:44
Daniel
Yeah. All right, let's wrap up the show. We've been blabbering a lot. Thanks for listening. Tune in every Friday and maybe not next Friday because it's break, but the next Friday after that we'll have a show. And thanks for listening. We love you guys. And happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy the outro music.
